The featured khukri for me was special work in a few different regards.

The customer had originally asked another bladesmith to make that knife for him and due to various circumstanes it never advanced beyond a roughly shaped blade blank made from a very beautiful pattern welded billet.

Whilst I usually prefer to work with my own materials, I am quite fond of khukri-style knifes and I accepted.

The problems came later due to various personal things in my life which needed care taking that this project was delayed beyond all means...

To make a long story short, it took me about one year to finish that project - which is an unusually long waiting time for me. The sepecial circumstances didn't make it easy to finish the Khukri as fast as I originally had planed to do...

At this place I want to thank the customer for his patience... In the end I'm very pleased with the work... but no more talk, see for yourself:

Khukri

The wood for the handle was supplied by the customer - it's deser iron wood of the highest grade... tough to work with, but stunningly beautiful and well worth the effort.

The pommel was machined from brass and the bolster was a Bronze Casting (Lost Wax Process) I did.

The Sheath was crafted from old vintage leather I got from an old saddle maker. It's original intention of use was to become swiss military leather-pouches & equipment, but that's no longer made from leather these days. The leather, whilst having a few natural surface blemishes has a nice look and is stiff and yet flexible after hardening.

Over all, I'm happy to have finally concluded this project successfully...

Starting on friday the 28th of March 2008 and ending on the following sunday Owen Bush (Bushfireforge) had organized a hammerin (gathering of bladesmiths) at his shop.

Before I go on I'd like to say "THANK YOU - THANK YOU ALL" for this world class event. The organisator (Owen), The Tutors (Don, Peter, Jake, Hector) and of course all fellow bladesmiths who attended the event and made this weekend into something I'll remember for a long time. I was glad I could make it over to england from Switzerland for this event. it was truly amazing. It was very hearty to meet old friends again and make a few new ones too!

The even included lectures and hands-on demos by Don Fogg, Peter Johnsson, Jake Powining, Hector Cole and Owen Bush.
Topics ranged from differential heat treatment by claycoting to debating the reconstroction & documentation of historical swords and the making of contemporary blades. And quite a few more topics.

Great company, good talks, loads of laughs and fun, pub-time and around 40 bladesmiths turned this event into something most will not likely forget ever again.

During the course of the weekend I've taken roughly 800 photos - which I spent a good amount of time on sorting out to get it down to a viewable 140 (roughly) shots.

You can find the gallery here:

or if you want to get to a beautiful full screen (automatically scaled to your screen size) slideshow:

and for those who want to see the cutting competition photos there's a separate gallery:

a quick word about copyright and such stuff...
You are free to download the photos of the hammerin, host them on your own website, print them out, give them to friends and family or customers (if you want to do so ;) ) - the only thing I ask of you in return is to credit myself (Daniel Gentile) as a photographer and if you use them in a digital form (E-Mail, Website, Blog,...) include a link to my Website (http://www.ferrumdg.com) or at least my photography website (http://www.dgentile.com)
Also I host my photos with SmugMug (I can fully recommend smugmug btw...) - you can cheaply order prints of any photo I've got in these galleries and have them sent to you at the chosen size.
Another thing - I've taken many close portraits - if someone feels uncomfortable with his photo and would prefer to have it removed e-mail me.
Also if someone likes his portrait shot so much as that he wants to use it on his website or documents - no problem as long as you include propper credits and a link.

now here are a few selected small "previews" of what you can find in these galleries
